Project “RFID to utilize traceability of railway transports”
The project was a collaboration between Volvo Logistics, Green Cargo and the Swedish Railway Administration with the aim of creating improved transparency and insights into rail services between Volvo Cars’ production facilities.
By applying passive UHF Gen 2 RFID tags to goods wagons, establishing an RFID reader infrastructure along the rail tracks and sharing a common IT application where all wagon movements were registered and made available to all involved parties, information transparency was achieved. The main findings from the project was that the RFID technology in this type of application was highly functional and reliable and a number of deviation areas were identified, mainly in the area of administration and sharing data between the parties. The technology creates a common set of indisputable information that all parties have access to, which creates possibilities for an overall improved logistics set-up.
Project “Secure and efficient transports through ports”
The project “Secure and efficient transports through ports” was conducted under the theme “Transportation security” in the collaboration arena Security Arena Lindholmen in Gothenburg.
The logistics concept was based on trailer transports between Volvo Logistics’ transshipment and Stena Line’s terminals in Gothenburg. The project was coordinated by Volvo Technology and involved the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), Customs, DSV Road and the carrier Wackfelts.
Starbright Consulting was contracted by the project to deliver and implement the RFID system to the project, which was one of the basic prerequisites for a better information sharing.
The project demonstrated that the focus can be on value adding activities instead of waiting times in ports. With increased efficiency comes also increased security since the opportunities for activities such as smuggling can be reduced. The pilot project showed that problems with increased demands for efficiency and safety can be resolved in a way that supports all the actors involved, an approach that is necessary to achieve security throughout the supply chain.
